If you are getting a tax refund from filing your income taxes, instead of spending it right away, invest it! If you put it in a low fee index fund, your money could double (or more!) in 10 years. Not retiring for 30 years? It could grow to be 7-8X the original value by the time you retire. As those ads say: feed the pig!
happiness
#50 – be spontaneous
Even if it’s a weeknight and you are tired. Or it’s the weekend and you are tired. Tired is not an excuse not to go out. Work the next day is not an excuse not to go out. If your friend invites you out, or if your significant other proposes an idea for fun, say yes. Be spontaneous, and in retrospect you will be so happy you did.
#49 – take a bubble bath
Indulge in a hot, sudsy, bubble bath. Lean back. Relax. Listen to music or a podcast. Read a book. Wrap up in a big towel or bathrobe when you get out.
#47 – pay off your debt
Your debt is an emergency. Pay off your debt as quickly as you can. Don’t go back into debt once it is paid off. It will reduce your stress and increase your happiness!
#45 – be sexy
Own something you can wear that will make you feel sexy. It could be a nice suit, dress, underwear, shoes–anything! Everyone needs to have something they can dress up in (if only every once in a while!) and feel especially attractive.
#44 – try improv
Take a formal class, join a troupe, or try it with friends or family. It is difficult at first, but with practice you will find it gets your creative juices flowing, and helps increase your confidence.
#43 – learn to use chopsticks
Although it takes practice, everyone should learn to use chopsticks. Practice picking up Cheerios, raisins, chocolate chips, or other small foods if you are a newbie. Once you learn you will see it is fun (and helps slow down your eating!).
#42 – spend time alone
Everyone needs a little alone time. Whether you just steal a few minutes alone after a shower, or you have the luxury to take a solo vacation, cherish your time to be with yourself.
#39 – hammock
Get yourself a hammock. Set it up in your backyard. Set it up on your front porch. Set it up in the woods. Set it up at the park. Set it up by the river. Bring a book. Bring a radio. Take a nap. Enjoy your time in the hammock.
#37 – get a pedicure
You can go to a nail salon, or do it at home. Soak your feet. Rub a nice moisturizer into your feet, toes, and heels. Cut and buff your nails. Add polish if you want a pop of color.
